How to Wear Chelsea Boots for Men: All That You Need to Know

Have you ever wondered how to wear men’s Chelsea boots? Since they’re so versatile, it’s often easy to take styling them for granted. Here are some best practices.

You have to love the Chelsea. It’s such a simple design that packs a lot of punch. If you look at the history of the Chelsea boot, you’ll see that it’s well-traveled. It has gone from Victorian mainstay to the Swinging London Mod scene to even the workwear world. As such, there’s definitely a wide variety of Chelseas.

When it comes to how to wear Chelsea boots for men specifically, it really depends on your personal style. Or the dress code. Or the time of year. There aren’t many wrong things you can do. However, following some best practices will make you look more put-together, practical, and stylish. Anyone can incorporate Chelseas into their rotation. Here’s how.

Chelsea Boots With Suits

There are a few ways to style Chelsea boots with suits. I will start with the most formal and work my way into smart and business casual.

For the most traditional suit-and-tie look, you want to choose a Chelsea with a proper dress shoe heel. Lush leather is better than suede, and darker colors are better than lighter colors. However, lighter suits (say gray, marine blue, or cream) go well with suede as they’re both on the more casual side of formal. Regardless of the boot’s material, Chelseas are a slick design, so you want your suit to be slim or classic fit.

While skinny fits aren’t on trend right now, I would say that Chelseas pair naturally with skinny-cut pants. So, if you love a close-to-body suit, these minimal boots are a good way to add intentionality to the outfit. And this is regardless of what’s in style or not. It just comes together quite cleanly. Moreover, in the post-monoculture age, you really have the freedom to wear what you love as long as you know how to style it.

Your best bets are almond-toed or pointed-toe boots in any of these cases. The former are classic and conservative, while the latter are chic and European-coded.

If you want to wear a more modern, slightly loose fit, meet it with a more casual-shaped toe. Consider a thick, square shape and even a chunkier heel. This will also fill out the wider hems. Imagine a broken suit featuring a navy suit jacket or blazer, slacks, and a more casual Chelsea.

You can even wear thick, lug-soled Chelseas with jeans and a suit jacket. The workwear aesthetic will give the outfit an almost Western wear vibe.

How to Wear Chelsea Boots With Jeans For Men

If you want a slicker look, pair dark slim-fit jeans with tapered Chelseas. You can also pair black jeans with tonal boots to create a fashionable color block. You can also try midnight blue or charcoal jeans. Finish either of those off with black boots, or try brown boots for a touch of Americana while maintaining the clean, urbane lines.

In fact, if you like workwear but prefer a generally more urban aesthetic, Chelseas are your friend. You can wear well-fitted jeans, button-downs, work shirts, or even utility shirts with Chelseas. They match the formality of the fit but aren’t too stuffy and won’t clash with the workwear pieces.

Similar to this “slick workwear” approach, Chelseas are an excellent choice for a “slick cowboy” approach. A chambray shirt, jeans, a Western belt, and some Chelseas? Perfection. You’ll look like a cowboy, but one who went to finishing school. You can lasso cattle, but you can also do a wine pairing.

And yes, you can even wear jeans and Chelseas in the summer. Imagine white or cream jeans with suede boots. If you’re so bold, go for a light tan boot, a light slate gray, or even a white boot. Top it off with a well-fitted crewneck T-shirt. The resulting combination is simple and straightforward but just slightly distinct. Despite how simple Chelseas are, they’d almost serve as the statement piece in the outfit.

Chelsea Boots With Leather Jacket

I believe there are two main, highly effective ways to pair your Chelsea boots with a leather jacket. You can either match the jacket or complement it.

Matching leathers on your body is a major rule of thumb. Of course, there are always proper ways to break the rules. But when you don’t want to spend too much time thinking about your outfit, you can always fall back on that convention. Wear brown shoes with a brown belt, and match your leather watch strap to your boots — you get the idea.

Pair a brown leather aviator jacket with brown leather Chelsea boots. Wear a shiny black moto jacket with glossy black boots.

If you want to add dynamism to your look, you can complement your jacket with your boots. Leather jackets and boots are generally utilitarian fashions. So, there’s nothing wrong with being a touch haphazard with how they come together.

My suggestion is to go for entirely different shades. If your jacket is dark, go for a boot in a lighter color — and vice versa. Then, take this further by going for different textures.

Perhaps you’re wearing a black leather jacket. If you go for a dark, cool brown Chelsea boot in leather, it might look as if you mismatched. However, if you go for a tan suede boot, you’ll look like you might be going for a punk or workwear-adjacent look.

Dark leather Chelseas with a light-colored leather jacket? Not for everyone. However, it definitely has a holiday-in-Jackson-Hole vibe. It’s outdoorsy but also fancy. Feel free to finish that look with a Stetson hat and a Rolex Explorer II.

How to Wear Chelsea Boots With Chinos

You want to start with the right fit since chinos are meant to be a bit less casual than jeans. Chinos should never be too skinny or too baggy.

If you like a skinny fit, just go for a slim. If you like a trendy, oversized look, go for a regular fit and a higher waist. Either will register as the more extreme look you prefer. However, they’ll be a cleaner, straighter silhouette version of it. And this is what you want when you’re wearing chinos with Chelseas.

You can certainly do a color block with chinos and boots, as you could with jeans. However, since chinos are dressier than denim, choosing a darker shoe and a lighter pant looks more natural.

For example, you could wear khaki chinos, a button-down, and an outer layer—a chore coat or a blazer. In this situation, I recommend a brown boot. It matches the smart casual style of the outfit. Remember, though you can dress chinos up or down, they’re an inherently smart casual piece.

Still, you can’t go wrong with a button-down, chinos, and a pull-over. Wearing Chelseas with such a staple combination would elevate it and make it more purposeful. By going for Chelseas instead of the easier choice of sneakers and loafers, you’ve essentially pulled off a remix of a classic. And you’ve done so without breaking any sartorial rules.

How to Wear Black Chelsea Boots For Men

Out of all the different kinds of Chelseas, black boots can be the most formal or can have the most cool factor. It all depends on how you style them.

Wear your almond-toed black boots with dark chinos, suit pants, and a dress shirt to achieve a dressier look. Since the boots aren’t technically dress shoes, you can choose clothes that aren’t highly formal but exude elegance. Examples include cardigans, vests, cashmere sweaters, silk scarves, dress watches, ascots, and cravats.

For example, you can wear a button-down, a cashmere cardigan, trousers, and black Chelseas. Or, you can go super simple with a splash of color or texture. Imagine a white dress shirt, black Chelseas, and black dress pants, topped off with a silk graphic scarf. Since the outfit itself is so neutral, you can basically wear any color scarf you want.

For a cooler, more urban look, pick any black boot. It can be a slick Italian Chelsea or a hard-lugged, combat-boot-adjacent one. Just choose whatever you most prefer.

Then, top it off with whatever casual aesthetic you love. Do you like an all-black, too-cool-for-school look? Go for it. If you like workwear, again, Chelseas pair excellently with utility shirts and cargo pants. You just have to choose cleaner silhouettes. Punk-adjacent pieces like motorcycle jackets and chain accessories also look great with black Chelseas.

Regardless of your personal style approach, make sure to add your favorite sunglass style to the mix. They’d look stylish on your face or hanging from your collar or shirt pocket.

How to Wear Brown Chelsea Boots For Men

Unlike black boots, brown boots are less formal and can have a more pragmatic vibe. As such, they pair naturally with smart casual looks and heritage looks like Americana and English countryside aesthetics.

It’s not that you can’t wear brown Chelseas in more formal settings. It’s that, all things considered, they are slightly less dressy. For example, could you wear brown dress Chelseas with a marine blue suit? Of course. But if you’re going for a black pinstripe power suit, you’re better off choosing black boots.

All that to say, I very much do prefer brown footwear to black footwear. You can wear brown suede Chelseas with jeans, chinos, t-shirts, button-downs, and a variety of outerwear.

Meanwhile, light brown leather Chelseas are year-rounders if you style them right. In the summer, you can wear light brown boots with linen trousers. In the spring, you can wear them with white jeans. And while darker colors are more conducive to cold weather, light brown Chelseas look handsome with corduroys and tweeds.

For a classic look, stick to neutrals and earth tones. Suede’s organic texture is conducive to browns, creams, and even forest greens. Secondly, I want to point out that suede Chelsea boots are more season-adaptable than you think.

Of course, when you think of boots in general, you think of cooler weather. Brown and tan suede boots pair perfectly with fall wardrobes. A good example is a knit shawl cardigan, khakis, and tan suede Chelseas. Meanwhile, darker, cooler footwear looks great with winter combinations. Think of a black cashmere turtleneck, wool charcoal pants, and black suede Chelseas.

Adding texture (like tweed or cashmere) in cooler seasons completes the outfit. The added textures will match the natural texturing of your suede boots.

For warmer seasons, you can opt for suede Chelseas over sneakers anytime you can wear jeans and sneakers. For example, in the summer, you can wear light slate Chelseas with blue jeans and a white T-shirt. You can wear pastel polo, khakis, and white Chelseas in the spring.

Just avoid suede boots on extra hot summer days, the kind of days you’d opt for shorts over pants.

Styling Chelsea Boots with Winter Coats

Chelsea boots look absolutely stylish with different winter coats. The combination is really versatile, whether you choose a duffel coat, a trench, or an overcoat.

I’d say to follow the same advice I gave regarding leather jackets. You can either match your coat or complement it. A black overcoat with leather or suede black Chelseas would look just as chic as a trench coat paired with khaki boots.

If you’re wearing a sporty, waxed duffel or a parka, a pair of desert boots would perfectly complement the look.
